New Architecture in South Tyrol
In the past 15 years the architecture scene in South
Tyrol has experienced an enormous upsurge. Throughout
the province projects well worth seeing have been
carried out, ranging from a district heating plant or various
educational facilities, to museums, transport facilities
and residential and commercial buildings.
All these projects are united by the aim of creating an architecture that is adapted to the landscape of South Tyrol, and hence the architects were not only called upon to provide contemporary solutions but also to engage in an intensive examination of the historically developed culture of life and building in the province.
To present the variety of South Tyrol‘s architecture landscape in a unified form the Südtiroler Künstlerbund (South Tyrol Artists‘ Association) and Merano arte decided to initiate a joint exhibition and book project on the occasion of the twin anniversaries, „60 years of the Südtiroler Künstlerbund“ and „10 years of Merano arte“. From among almost 400 nominated buildings an international jury chose 48 architecture projects from all regions that were then prepared for presentation in the exhibition and the book. The photographic documentation of the buildings is by Robert Fleischanderl.
