A Journey Through Italy in Landscape Painting
There was a time, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, when a “grand tour” of the Italian peninsula was a rite of passage for Europeans and Americans alike.
It was often a journey of education in refinement and acquisition of maturity against a background of suggestive locations. Crossing the Alps or disembarking by sea, famous painters, authors and other travellers came to study the monuments of antiquity and the masterpieces of the Renaissance, gaining appreciation for and finding inspiration in the Italian panorama.
The concept of this evocative exhibition, A Journey Through Italy in Landscape Painting, is to re-create the “grand tour” of times past for new audiences today through the exposition of approximately 40 original landscape of the 1700’s and 1800’s; a journey through time, but above all, through the Italy that once was and still continues to capture the world’s imagination.
